New London Routemaster bus runs out of fuel on M1

The new prototype London Routemaster bus ran out of fuel on a motorway, just days after being formally unveiled.
The New Bus for London had to pull over on Monday after warning lights came on.
The bus, which runs on a hybrid diesel-electric motor, was not refuelled before being driven from London to Millbrook
Testing Ground, Bedfordshire.Transport for London (TfL) said the bus recharged its battery using energy from its brakes,
but on long journeys had to run on diesel. The prototype bus was unveiled by London Mayor Boris Johnson on Friday
and is undergoing testing in the capital. It had been displayed in London over the weekend after the Trafalgar Square unveiling

saturdaynight/image00201CCC6E9.jpg

The bus is designed for stop-start driving, which enables the battery to be recharged automatically," a TfL spokesman said."
However when the bus undertakes long, non-stopping motorway journeys, such as its journey to Bedfordshire this morning,
it can lose charge and the driver is briefed to pull to the side of the road to allow the battery to recharge. "
After the battery had re-charged the driver was unable to re-start the engine. "It was later established that the bus had run out of diesel. "
Once the bus was refuelled it carried on its journey. We will be speaking with the operator to ensure that this does not happen again.
"TfL claims the new bus will be the most environmentally friendly vehicle of its kind once it enters service. Eight of them will come
into service in 2012

THE WORD ON THE STREET, THE MOTORWAYS, THE A ROADS…

To spread the word and maximise awareness of its free membership ‘pay as you need it’ roadside assistance scheme, Road To Recovery UK Ltd has splashed the message across dozens of artic trucks travelling the length and breadth of the country. The purpose of this is to encourage as many people as possible to join the scheme and the more members join, the more work RTR will be able to generate for recovery operators on its database.

The scheme benefits both motorists and recovery operators. The motorist saves money while still retaining peace of mind knowing that assistance is available should they break down or have an accident. Recovery operators gain access to a much higher volume of business without needing to conduct any marketing of their own.

Paul Hoyle, MD of RTR said “We are always looking for new ways to grow the membership of the scheme and our own marketing push will bring a direct benefit to the recovery operators registered with our database. More members lead to greater volumes of breakdowns needing assistance which we pass on to local providers but they need to be on the database to take advantage.”

Advertising like this, as well as RTR’s new iPhone App, is adding more and more members every day so recovery operators looking to tap into this source of work are urged to register with the database at

Chris Herbert

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I hear of the sad passing of a dear friend, of not just myself but the Recovery Industry in the UK and Ireland Dennis Herbert. No doubt this will come as much of a shock to you as indeed it did to me but our dear friend Dennis has died.
Now the normal thing to do when someone dies is to use clichés and platitudes to tell everyone what a wonderful person they were I do not have to this as everyone who ever knew or came into contact with him knew what a wonderful man he was and just how much of a loss his passing is to his loving family, friends and the industry.
Dennis was a staple at every recovery event, lending a hand wherever he could, I always knew that at moment’s notice I could rely on Dennis to compare an auction, give out prizes, take minutes or photographs, he never refused. With his winning smile and charm he could take on any job and would give any task his best shot.
He will be sadly missed by the Industry in the UK but here also as many of you know he always had time for Irish Recovery operators, he would listen to their opinions and if they had any questions he would provide answers. He provided Recovery operators with a platform and brought their concerns to the appropriate forum.
A businessman, father, grandfather, engineer, recovery operator, charmer, joker and good friend he will be missed and never forgotten that is for sure.Just to say on behalf of everyone in IFRS and the Recovery industry in Ireland we want to extend our deepest sympathies to the Herbert family, Dennis’ wife Sue, sons Chris and Neil and daughter  all his relatives that we are truly grateful for the opportunity we had to get to know such a amazing person who will be greatly missed.

DENNIS HERBERT PASSED AWAY TODAY AFTER A SHORT ILLNESS, OUR CONDOLENCES GO OUT TO HIS FAMILY

IFRS MAN OF THE YEAR DENNIS HERBERT

I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH DENNIS MANY TIMES WITH THE AVRO BENEVOLENT FUND AND OTHER ISSUES, DENNIS WAS ONE OF LIFE'S TRUE GENTLEMEN, NOTHING WAS TOO MUCH TROUBLE FOR HIM, ANY ADVICE OR HELP YOU NEEDED DENNIS WAS ALWAYS AT THE OTHER END OF THE PHONE. I CANT REMEMBER ANY EVENT THAT DENNIS HAS NOT SUPPORTED OR ATTENDED OR BE ON HAND TO HELP IN ANY WAY THAT HE COULD.

IN HIS POSITION HE WAS SOMETIMES ASKED TO TAKE ON SOME HARD TASKS LIKE IN SCOTLAND IN OCTOBER 09 WHEN WE ALL ATTENDED THE FUNERAL OF LITTLE MCKENZIE MCMANUS WHERE DENNIS WAS ON HAND TO DO ONE OF THE MOST HEART WRENCHING AND BEAUTIFUL READINGS I HAVE EVER HEARD.  HE WAS ALSO AWARDED THE HEART OF GOLD AT AVRO EX.

It is indeed a very sad day for the Recovery Industry both here in Ireland and the U.K. to hear that a very dear friend and colleague Dennis Herbert passed away today. Dennis was one of life’s gentlemen and will be sadly missed by all who come in contact with him carrying out his duties as inspector for R.I.E.S. (Recovery Industry Engineering Standards Ltd) He was known the length and breath of England. He was also a friend of AVRO and was very active on the board of the AVRO benevolent fund. Last year he was very much involved with the organisation of the AVRO-EX 2010. Dennis had not been well for a number of months but the news we received to day was a total shock to us all. May he rest in Peace
Eilis Murray, President of AVRO

HARLEY DAVIDSON – YOU’VE GOT THE BIKE SO WHY NOT GET THE TRUCK!
Miller Industries, the parent company of Boniface Engineering, have been installing recovery equipment during 2010 onto Harley Davidson branded limited edition Lone-Star trucks - in this case, a Century 5130 but at Florida in April a Vulcan V-70 was debuted.  Due to the appeal of the Harley Davidson brand, Boniface are offering similar vehicles for sale here in Europe.  The equipment that can be fitted is drawn from the huge range of product that Miller Industries Towing & Recovery Equipment, the world’s largest supplier of towing equipment, offers – so there is a very wide range from which customer’s can choose!  Custom paint jobs often seen on Harley Davidson motorcycles can be replicated on the truck which allows Harley Davidson owners to have a motorbike and truck to match! Undeniably striking as well as functional these trucks are limited edition and only available on ‘special order’ which provides some exclusivity.  Contact Boniface Engineering on 01842 754232 should you be interested or if you can’t afford the truck but would like a picture still call and they will send you one!

Ashfield Add Another Boniface Vehicle

Ashfield Recovery based in Kirkby-In-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire have added this impressive Mitsubishi Canter with Champion aluminium slidebed to their fleet. They have owned and operated a number of Boniface products for several years, and when it came to needing a new vehicle Gary & Dave knew just who to turn to. “Our existing Champion beds have stood the test of time and done an exceptional job” said Dave, “they are out every day,  have proven themselves to be very reliable and the aluminium beds still look good after several years of operation”.  Ashfield's customer base is quite diverse and the jobs range from routine collection and deliveries through to serious RTC recoveries. Their vehicles are kept busy all day every day and so reliability and after sales service is paramount to their business. “Whenever we have had a problem or needed spare parts or accessories, Boniface has always been quick to respond. I would have no hesitation in recommending Boniface or their products to anyone” commented Gary. This latest vehicle was fitted with Boniface's Ultra Slim LED beacon, wrecker kit, 2nd car lift and two of the new Super Size stainless steel locker boxes which, due to their size and durability are becoming very popular. Details of the Champion aluminium slidebed and all the other Boniface products can be found on the Boniface web site at www.boniface-eng.com .

A group of twenty five travelled from Ireland to the cotswolds for the thirtieth anniversary AVRO show, although the weather was perfect we were very disappointed at the extremely low turnout . You could have walked around the whole show including stands in five minutes. Below are a few photos of the usual suspects enjoying themselves
