Now they're getting hooked. Cops rounded up a band
of Bronx tow truck drivers who allegedly swiped 16 cars off the streets and sold them as clunkers to a junkyard, police said. The drivers, who were working independently, made
$400 to $500 for each car they dumped as scrap metal at New England Auto Parts in the Bronx, police said. They got away with
the scam by using phony information on DMV forms, which allows cars worth less than $1250 and eight years or older to be scrapped.
NYPD investigators were tipped off after grand larceny
auto numbers suddenly began to spike. “In the Bronx, we noticed a slight increase in grand larceny auto which is unusual,”
said Deputy Inspector Joe Kenny of the NYPD Auto Crimes Division. Investigators began zeroing in on salvage yards and poring
over business records, soon realizing the cars being junked were stolen. “It seems like it was too tempting for them,”
Kenny said.” These tow truck drivers were acting with impunity, riding around and taking cars."“They thought they could get away with it, without
fear of repercussion.” Kenny added. The suspects were identified as Filpo Malava, 41,
Nicholas Montague,28, Herman Williams, 41, Jose Ayala, 23, Buenaventura Sanchez, 56, and Nickolas Maldonado, 30. They were arrested yesterday and charged with grand
larceny auto and criminal possession of stolen property. Another nine tow truck drivers were also busted and charged with
falsifying business records. of repercussion.” Kenny added.
